The way a movie appears on a screen is based upon its aspect ratio. Aspect ratio is the proportion between the width and height of a rectangular display. The most common aspect ratio used in current devices is 16:9.
Some newer phones and tablets feature an aspect ratio of 18:9 or greater. This may cause some movies to play with black bars on top and bottom and occasionally on the sides of the display.
iPhone X
The iPhone X features an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Because most videos display at 16:9 (some display at 2.40:1), the iPhone X will apply vertical black bars to the left and right sides of the screen in that format. When playing a movie with an aspect ratio of 2.40:1, black bars may also appear at the top and bottom of the screen.
Samsung Galaxy S8 / Galaxy S8+ / Galaxy S9 / Galaxy S9+
The aspect ratio of the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, S9 and S9+ is 18.5:9. Because most videos display at 16:9 (some display at 2.40:1), these devices will apply vertical black bars to the left and right sides of the screen in that format. When playing a movie with an aspect ratio of 2.40:1, black bars may also appear at the top and bottom of the screen.
